Comfort-focused sedation dental treatment for nervous child in San Pedro, CA

At Groat Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s comfort is important to us. If your child is anxious about dental visits, we can help calm them with sedation dentistry. Expertly administered by our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Christopher Groat, sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to help children enjoy their dental visits. Schedule an appointment with our San Pedro, California, office to learn more about our sedation dentistry options.

How does sedation dentistry work?

It’s normal for children to feel uneasy or anxious about visiting the dentist. Dental anxiety can stem from fear of the unknown, unfamiliar sounds or sights, or even stories they’ve heard from others. In some cases, a past dental visit that was uncomfortable or scary can also contribute to this anxiety.

Whatever the cause, we are ready to help your child feel calm during dental visits with sedation dentistry.  During your child’s examination visit, we will thoroughly evaluate your child’s medical history and recommend the most appropriate sedation option.

Our office uses nitrous oxide sedation, often referred to as “laughing gas,” to help ease their nerves. This gentle sedation is safe, effective, and especially well-suited for children. It helps them feel relaxed and more at ease during their appointment—without putting them to sleep.

Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask placed over your child’s nose. The effects kick in within a few minutes, and your child feels more comfortable and less anxious. The effects wear off quickly after the procedure, so your young one can resume their everyday activities without lingering drowsiness.

Occasionally, children with more complex dental needs,  severe dental anxiety, or special needs require deeper levels of sedation.  In these situations, we take the time to thoroughly review how IV sedation or general anesthesia can be used to safely and comfortably restore your child’s oral health.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Your child deserves quality dental care. Don’t let dental anxiety prevent them from enjoying the best version of their smile. Sedation dentistry is a safe, effective solution for turning dental visits into a positive experience.

Here are the benefits of sedation dentistry.

  • Comfort and relaxation: Children may still be uneasy even with local anesthetics. Sedatives calm the nerves, eliminating feelings of fear or anxiety. Your child can stay comfortable throughout treatment, regardless of the procedure’s complexity.
  • Pain management: If your child has low pain tolerance or increased sensitivity, sedation dentistry is an excellent solution. Besides a relaxing experience, sedation dentistry makes treatment pain-free.
  • Creates positive dental experiences: Sedation can turn a stressful appointment into a peaceful one, helping children build positive associations with dental care that last into adulthood.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

We know having your child sedated can be stressful for you. However, we assure you the procedure is completely safe for your little one. We use FDA-approved methods to provide sedation. Still, we conduct thorough pre-screening to ensure your child is safe for sedation dentistry. This involves scrutinizing their medical history, current medications, past reactions to sedation, etc. Additionally, your San Pedro sedation dentist keeps a close eye on your child during and after sedation to optimize their comfort and safety.
